Register Your .GAY Domain

The .GAY Domain

Although new domain suffixes (nTLDs) have been available to us since 2014, we have had to wait for the .gay domain until September 2020, when free registration was launched. The .gay domain didn’t make it easy. Companies that were interested in operating it had to face objections from politicians, representatives of countries where homosexuality is a hot topic, and transgender communities.

In the end, Top Level Design managed to convince ICANN that it would take good care of the .gay domain, and on May 23, 2019, they won a contract for the domain. A year later, on September 16, 2020, they launched its public registration in cooperation with CentralNic, which takes care of the technical operation.

Since then, more than 13,000 .gay domains have been registered. It is most popular in the USA, where almost 73% of .gay domains are registered. Next in line, is the United Kingdom with 3.7% and Germany with 3.4%. Dozens of .gay domains are registered in the Czech Republic. Most at WEDOS.

The Approval Process for the Creation of the .GAY Domain

As mentioned above, the .gay domain did not have it easy. At the same time, there was quite a lot of interest in it. In the end, only three bidders made it to the private auction, of which Top Level Design was the best.

Alain Pellet, a professor of law at the University of Paris, a former member of the UN Commission on International Law and the International Court of Justice, has played a major role in approving the .gay domain. It was in May 2012 that ICANN chose to decide if the .gay domain is in the best interests of Internet users.

Alain Pellet’s December 2012 report stated that most objections to the .gay domain were based on insults based on religious or socio-cultural norms that were not internationally shared or uniform and were not recognized by any international law. On the contrary, he pointed to a number of national and international laws that enforce non-discrimination, especially with regard to sexual identity and gender. He also noted that LGBTQ rights are spreading and over time becoming a more understood and respected topic.

He noted that some parties may continue to oppose or be offended by such identities and behaviors, but believes that the .gay domain will create a clear space where those parties will know that the content will include gay-related material. and therefore can avoid these sites.

Of course, the approval process was accompanied by more and more objections and protests. ICANN, however, already had a clear position to which it could refer. This addressed rather factual comments on the word gay as such.

Who is Behind the .GAY Domain?

The .gay domain is backed by the American company Top Level Design, LLC from Oregon, which has a contract to operate a total of four nTLDs – .design, .ink, .wiki and .gay (We offer all these domains).

The technological background is taken care of by the British company CentralNic, which is the longest-running domain registrar operator in the world. It is also in charge of the Slovak domain .SK.

We have signed contracts with Top Level Design and CentralNIC and we are in direct contact with them if necessary. We are able to solve both technical and administrative problems directly with them.

Why Do We Offer the .GAY Domain?

Free registration of .gay domains was launched just after our birthday (our birthday is on September 13). Coincidentally, our developers have just completed and tested the connection to the CentralNIC system. We have had an e-mail in the mailbox for some time if we do not want to join the open registration.

The company’s management then decided that this was an ideal opportunity. We will celebrate our birthday by starting the registration of new domain suffixes and we will start with the .gay domain, which is completely new on the Czech market. We would be one of the first companies to offer it.

We registered dozens of .gay domains in a matter of hours. This surprised us, because these domains are several times as expensive as the popular .cz or .eu domain. It turned out that not everyone cares about widely used domains, where there is nothing to choose from. There are customers who like to pay extra for the domain they want.

A year later, we found out that more than half of the .gay domains registered in this way were renewed.

For us, this was a signal that new domain suffixes, although often much more expensive than popular, cheap, and well-established ones, may be the preferred choice for many people. Simply because you choose exactly what you need.

This also applies to the .gay domain. If your project is aimed at the gay or LGBTQ community, then you have something to choose from. In addition, there is another word in the domain suffix itself that both visitors and search engines understand.

Is the .GAY Domain for You?

The English word “gay” refers to people who are permanently physically, romantically and / or emotionally attracted to people of the same sex. This, howeverm, does not limit the domain in any way. It is widely used by the LGBTQ community. In addition, as Top Level Design writes on its website, the .gay domain is for everyone. If you like it you can use it for anything. It is only necessary to take into account that greater emphasis is placed on compliance with the rules associated with hate content. Hate just doesn’t belong to the .gay domain.

Supporting the LGBTQ Community

20% of each .gay domain registration fee is dedicated by Top Level Design to combat discrimination and the challenges facing the LGBTQ community. So if you choose the .gay domain for your website, you will automatically contribute financially to community centers, for example.

Reach the Group You Are Targeting

If your services are largely focused on the LGBTQ community, then make it clear through the domain. Not only visitors will understand this, but also search engine robots, which can refine their results for specific users.

Organizations and Groups

If your organization or group is focused on this community, then there is no better choice than a .gay domain. It not only provides its focus in the name, but at the same time its rules are very strict, so as to guarantee a safe space for visitors. Hateful content has nothing to share here. It also clearly defines the space. No visitor can type a .gay site into a browser and state that they didn’t  expect LGBTQ-related content on the site.

Specialize Your Content

Many companies have already found that creating a special offer for the LGBTQ community pays off. There is also the English term “pink money”. According to a 2019 study, the global LGBTQ community had a purchasing power of $ 3.7 trillion. More and more companies are focusing on their offer for the LGBTQ community. So what’s better for promotion than a .gay domain.

When a Community Needs to Make Itself Known

The .gay domain has also become widely used for the websites of festival organizers and marches of LGBTQ communities. Again, there is the advantage of stricter rules and clearly marked content.

Be Who You Are

Being a member of the LGBTQ community is part of you, but it can also be part of your brand. People love stories and what you are is part of your story.
